It was frequently very very slow to connect and make a call, and there were several times when it just didn't work at all and I had to power my phone on an off to try to resolve the issues. Activation was painful.

Yes, you are able to hotspot/tether from your phone to another phone or device whilst in the EU or UK.
The mobile data APN settings should automatically update when you insert the eSIM in you phone. If it does not, you need to update the settings so it states the following; Access Point Name (APN): orange Username: orange Password: orange
The features on the eSIM are valid for 31 days from activation.
If you want to recharge the eSIM either within or after the 31 days duration then you must first register your identification details at https://travel.orange.com. We recommend doing this within the first 3 weeks of activating it if you plan to top up/recharge as it could take them a couple of days to verify. You are then able to top up using the same link and the different options will be noted after you input your phone number for the SIM. Alternatively, you can purchase multiple sims prior to your travel, based on the duration of your travel and swap them after 31 days usage.
Should you run into any issues with the sim whilst overseas then we encourage you to email us immediately at support@simcorner.com and let us know the following information; Your order number or the name that the order is under along with the SIM number and phone number. Which country you are in currently and whether the sim connects to any network, if so, which network? Did you receive any SMS after you inserted the sim? If so, please send us a screenshot of that message. Message us screenshots of any error message you are getting. What phone model you are using? Any other information about the issue, which will assist us in helping you resolve the issue. 
Within the same sim card If someone with the same sim wishes to call you from their phone number they would just need to call you on your France based phone number. International Calls If someone who is not using a France based sim card wishes to call they would need to add the France calling code +33 prior to the phone number For example, if your phone number is 0x xx xx xx xx, then they would need to dial +33 x xx xx xx xx   You can also connect them via data based apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Skype, Messenger, etc .
If you are travelling to different countries that are noted on the "Countries Coverage" section, then all you need to do is restart your phone as you move from one country to another. The sim will automatically connect to a local carrier.
