Phuket is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand, and it's easy to see why. The island has plenty of activities and attractions that will keep you busy for weeks. Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or an adventure-filled trip, Phuket has something for everyone!
History
Phuket has a rich history that is reflected in its culture and people. The island was once an important trading port, with goods from across the region arriving here on boats as they navigated through the Strait of Malacca. This means that many cultures have influenced Phuket's unique identity. There are lots of places to learn about this fascinating part of Thai history, including museums and temples; even some nature parks offer insight into how early settlers lived off the land.
1. Pa Tong
Located on the western coast of Phuket island, Pa Tong is the most populated area of Phuket and the most visited tourist destination in Thailand. It's essentially one big party town, with a long list of things to do and see.
You can live it up at one of the many beach bars or dance clubs or head to one of the local pubs for some live music or karaoke. If you're looking for something a little calmer, take advantage of the long stretch of clean sand and swim in the warm ocean, or visit one of the many resorts to enjoy an afternoon on their private beach.
Any time is a good time for Pa Tong, but if you're planning on visiting during your stay in Phuket, we recommend avoiding the June-September monsoon season. The heavy rains make for a miserable trip, and maybe even put a damper on your holiday mood!
2. Kata Beach
On any given day, there are people from all over the world lounging on the pristine shores of Kata Beach, which gets its name from the soft white sand that makes it appear as though you're sitting on powdered sugar.
More laidback and family-oriented than Pa Tong, Kata is a great choice for when you’re looking to just relax.
At the northern end of Kata Beach, there's a huge rock formation called Kamala Rock. It towers over the beach and is a favorite spot for sunbathing, sea kayaking, snorkeling, and even cliff jumping. If you're looking to do some surfing or other water sports, you can rent your gear right there on the beach at any number of small shops.
3. Old Phuket Town
The original Phuket, known as "Old Town," is nothing like the rest of Thailand. It feels both new and old all at once—a real melting pot of cultures.
The Old Town is Thailand’s largest historical area with many buildings dating back hundreds of years. There are also several Buddhist temples here such as Wat Chalong, which was built in 1806 and houses an impressive Buddha image.
In Old Town, you'll find the city's most famous sight, Khao Rang Mountain. The mountain is so-named because it resembles a golden conch shell. Its summit offers a breathtaking view of the island and its surroundings. This is not to be missed!
4. Phang Nga Bay
Located in the Andaman Sea, Phang Nga Bay is another popular tourist destination in Thailand. Covering 1,079 square kilometers, it's also home to some of the country's most beautiful islands, including those of Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don. These two tiny tropical paradises are accessible by boat or plane from Phuket Town—and they're a must-visit for any traveller seeking an adventure out on the open sea.
If you find yourself wanting more than just a day trip from Phuket Town, take advantage of your stay at one of its many resorts (the area has over 3,000) and explore some of Thailand's other natural wonders: limestone mountains rise up out of shallow waters so clear you'll be able to see all kinds of marine life swimming below your feet; caves with stalactites hanging down suggestively like underwater temples; sprawling mangrove forests filled with wildlife galore!
5. Khao Phing Kan a.k.a. James Bond Island
Khao Phing Kan is a small island just off the coast of Phuket. It's known for two things: one, it's a beautiful place to visit, with plenty of water activities, and two, it was featured in the movie The Man With The Golden Gun, the 1974 James Bond film.
When you arrive at James Bond Island, you'll see why it's so popular: its rock formations are covered with lush green grasses that provide an idyllic backdrop for your time here. The water surrounding this small island is also beautiful, making for some incredible snorkeling opportunities as well as relaxing views from above (you can get up close and personal with some pretty cool birds there).
6. Similan Islands National Park
If you're a fan of snorkeling and scuba diving, the Similan Islands National Park is just the place for you. It consists of nine islands off the coast of Phuket and thanks to their distance from the mainland, they've remained relatively untouched by human intervention.
The combination of clear seas and excellent coral reefs makes the Similans some of the best diving destinations in Asia. However, even if you're not a diver, there are plenty of other reasons to visit.
For starters, there are over 20 types of coral species here, including soft corals that are at risk of extinction elsewhere in the world. Another major draw is the endangered whale shark (the world's largest fish), which can sometimes be spotted by divers.
Reefs teeming with marine life make up nearly two-thirds of the total area of the park's waters, so you'll find plenty to keep you busy if diving isn't your thing - but if it is, then you're in for a real treat.
Conclusion
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing time on the beach, spend time scuba diving, or to experience its vibrant nightlife, Phuket offers a sweet escape from the normal hustle and bustle of life!
